Universal Hall

The Universal Hall hosts a variety of events and performances throughout the year and is proud to be a venue for the newly formed National Theatre of Scotland.

Events at the Hall include concerts of all kinds: contemporary music, evenings with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Nairn International Jazz Festival; dramatic performances by the National Theatre of Scotland, 7:84 Theatre Company, TAG Theatre Company; a range of comedy, dance, film and children's entertainment.

Flexible facilties at the Universal Hall also make it an efficient and attractive venue for conference and workshop events, including the Findhorn Foundation's international conferences.

The Universal Hall is working together with Moray Council to develop the Hall's potential further so that it can become an even more important resource for the local area, offering services to the whole of Moray and beyond.

Autumn 08 Season Special Offer: Earlybird Discount Scheme

To encourage more advanced bookings on the easy-to-use Booth website (www.thebooth.co.uk), the first 20 tickets booked through the Booth for any show in our Autumn season will receive a £1 discount. Book quickly through the Booth and you could get one of the discounted tickets. The offer runs for shows from August to December 08 and excludes the Nairn Jazz Festival which is an external promotion.


THE !GUBI FAMILY

%21gubi%20Family.jpgThe !gubi Family (pronounced with a tongue click) consists of 6 San Bushmen musicians, ranging in age from 18 to 80, and are the keepers of a vanishing tradition of San Musical Culture from the Kalahari Desert, Namibia. The San are the originators of trance dance and their music is specifically designed to evoke an altered state of consciousness through the rhythms and beats, They traditionally play the mouthbow, the mbira and the zuma (four-stringed instrument) Recently, the !gubis have worked with renowned UK artist, Banco De Gaia, receiving rapturous reviews from London audiences. As a prelude to their performance in the Universal Hall the !gubi family will hold a participatory trance dance around a fire on the dancing green behind the Hall. This is a unique opportunity to participate in an ancient form of tribal dance that has been part of the ceremonial life of Africa for thousands of years. Some will learn the chants and sit round the fire whilst others join in this healing dance. “When I dance,” the San say “my ancestors enter my body and give me the power to see what makes people sick.”

JAMIE LAVAL & ASHLEY BRODER

Jamie%20Lavell.jpgAlready a favorite in the arena of innovative Celtic performers, the duo has recently been turning heads of Bluegrass and Classical audiences as well. Their CD Zephyr In The Confetti Factory won the popular vote in the World Traditional Song category this past year in the 2007 Independent Music Awards. Jamie Laval is one of the top Scottish fiddlers on the International touring musicians’ circuit today. Together with mandolin virtuoso Ashley Broder, the duo creates a completely unique approach to traditional Irish and Scottish music.

dylan%20moran.jpg Dylan Moran the unpredictable, bizarre, elegiac, often cruel but above all painfully funny star of Black Books, Shaun of the Dead and Run Fat Boy Run will be trying out new material in a series of Scottish warm-up dates prior to his highly anticipated Autumn tour: 'What It Is'. This is a rare opportunity to see stand-up work in progress from the man labelled 'The Oscar Wilde of Comedy'.

ONE GIANT LEAP

Blasting off from the Big Bang, travel alongside our ancestors through time and space as they try to solve the mysteries of the Universe, before landing on the Moon and taking that one small step towards one giant leap. Told in Wee Stories’ unique brand of inventive story-telling theatre, One Giant Leap will be an illuminating, entertaining and rewarding theatrical event for everyone from ages 10 to adult.

FLEETO

Fleeto%20enhanced.jpg Written and directed by Paddy Cunneen this powerful and beautifully produced short play for Scotland today features two boys, one murder and two victims. When his friend is stabbed, a young lad from a housing scheme falls in with a gang. The terrible revenge he takes at random brings disaster on himself and the family of his victim. Inspired by The Iliad and drawing on contemporary Glasgow's so-called "knife culture" Fleeto is a hard-hitting contemporary Scottish re-invention of the Greek tragic form. The performances will also feature young adults from the local community. 'Fleeto' is 55 minutes in length (with no interval) and contains very strong language. Not suitable for young people under the age of 16.

CAROLYN HILLYER AND NIGEL SHAW

His style is a frantic mix of the ad-libbed moment to the story of the clothes he is wearing and how he got here today.

RACHEL WALKER

He makes the village elders an offer of salvation, but at a terrible price. Will they choose the last resort?

This talented acappella singing trio consists of Carol Mason-Corkery, Heather Hatch, and Kate O’Connell – each a fine singer in her own right. African to Baltic songs; country, bluegrass, folk; gospel and pop all feature in their repertoire. The trio also work with local community arts groups who will join them on stage. This year saw the development by Carol Denyer of the “Can’t Sing Won’t Sing” Women’s Project in Buckie; Heather runs SAYI Youth Drama group in Aberlour, and Kate has a new Youth Choir in the Forres area. With their beautiful blend of wonderful harmonies, Sonas will take you on an amazing world musical journey.
